Registered Account Calculators — RRSP, TFSA, RESP, FHSA
Canada offers several tax-advantaged registered accounts, each with distinct rules and benefits. The RRSP provides an upfront tax deduction on contributions (deductible at your marginal rate) with tax-deferred growth, but withdrawals are fully taxed as income. The TFSA offers no upfront deduction, but all growth and withdrawals are completely tax-free.
For 2026, the RRSP contribution limit is $33,810 or 18% of prior-year earned income, whichever is less. The TFSA annual limit is $7,000, with a cumulative lifetime room of $109,000 for anyone who has been eligible since 2009. The RESP provides government grants (CESG) of 20% on the first $2,500 contributed annually per child, up to $500/year and $7,200 lifetime.
The FHSA (First Home Savings Account), introduced in 2023, combines features of both the RRSP and TFSA — contributions are tax-deductible (like an RRSP) and withdrawals for a qualifying first home purchase are tax-free (like a TFSA). The annual limit is $8,000 with a $40,000 lifetime maximum.

Frequently Asked Questions
RRSP or TFSA — which is better?
If your marginal tax rate now is higher than what you expect in retirement, the RRSP wins. If your rate will be the same or higher in retirement (common for lower earners), the TFSA wins. Most Canadians benefit from using both.
What happens to unused TFSA room?
Unused TFSA contribution room carries forward indefinitely. If you withdraw from your TFSA, that amount is added back to your room the following January 1.
Can I use my RRSP for a home purchase?
Yes, through the Home Buyers Plan (HBP). You can withdraw up to $60,000 from your RRSP tax-free for a qualifying first home. You must repay the amount over 15 years.
