Northwest Territories Income Tax: 2026 Overview

The Northwest Territories operates a four-bracket territorial income-tax system with rates of 5.9%, 8.6%, 12.2% and 14.05%. The starting rate is among the lowest in Canada, and even at the top end the combined federal-territorial marginal rate of 47.05% remains lower than every Canadian province except Nunavut. Residents of Yellowknife, Inuvik, Hay River and other NWT communities benefit from a tax structure designed to partially offset the territory's exceptionally high cost of living.

A signature feature of NWT taxation is the Cost of Living Tax Credit, which provides relief for the high price of food, fuel and housing in northern communities. The basic personal amount (BPA) for 2026 is $18,198 — significantly above the federal BPA. NWT residents may also qualify for the Northern Residents Deduction, a federal deduction that allows a residency component (up to $11/day) plus a travel component for eligible trips. NWT does not impose a payroll tax or health-care premium, though employers must pay a Northern Residents Allowance to employees in certain industries.

The Northwest Territories does not impose a surtax, health-care premium or payroll tax. The basic personal amount of $18,198 in 2026 is among the highest territorial or provincial BPAs in Canada. The NWT Cost of Living Tax Credit provides additional refundable relief, and a separate Heating Cost Rebate helps lower-income households with winter fuel expenses. NWT residents can also claim the federal Northern Residents Deduction (Zone A or Zone B depending on community), reducing taxable income. The NWT Child Benefit, Risk-Of-Tenancy Benefit, and Senior Citizen Supplementary Benefit round out the territory's tax-credit and benefit programs.
