British Columbia Income Tax: 2026 Overview
British Columbia operates one of the most steeply progressive income-tax systems in Canada, with seven brackets ranging from 5.06% on the lowest tier up to 20.5% on income above roughly $259,829. The province's lowest rate is the smallest provincial starting rate among the Canadian provinces, making BC relatively favourable for low-income earners. However, high-income professionals in Vancouver, Victoria and across the Lower Mainland face one of the steepest combined federal-provincial top rates in the country at 53.5%.
BC eliminated the controversial Medical Services Plan (MSP) premiums in January 2020, replacing the household-paid premium with the Employer Health Tax (EHT) levied on employers with annual payrolls above $1.5 million. For employees, this means MSP no longer appears as a paycheque deduction. The basic personal amount (BPA) for 2026 is $13,216. BC's middle brackets at 12.29%, 14.7% and 16.8% make it less competitive than Alberta or Saskatchewan for the upper middle class, although still less punitive than Quebec or Atlantic provinces.

BC does not levy a provincial surtax. Resident-paid MSP premiums were eliminated in 2020; instead, employers with payrolls over $1.5 million pay the Employer Health Tax (1.95% top rate) which does not appear on employee pay stubs. The basic personal amount is $13,216 for 2026. Notable non-refundable credits include the BC tax reduction credit for low incomes, the climate action tax credit, the renter's tax credit, and the BC family benefit for residents with children. Tradespersons and apprentices may qualify for additional sector-specific credits.
