Electric Vehicle Incentives and Costs in Canada

The federal Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program provides a point-of-sale rebate of up to $5,000 for battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and longer-range plug-in hybrid vehicles with an MSRP under $55,000 (or $60,000 for larger models such as trucks and SUVs). Shorter-range plug-in hybrids qualify for $2,500. Several provinces stack additional incentives on top of the federal rebate — British Columbia offers up to $4,000 through the CleanBC Go Electric program, and Quebec provides up to $7,000 through its Roulez vert program, making the combined savings substantial.

Charging costs depend heavily on electricity rates, which vary by province. Home charging on a Level 2 (240V) charger is the most economical option, typically costing $2–$4 per 100 km. Public DC fast chargers are more expensive, generally ranging from $0.30–$0.50 per kWh, but charge times of 20–40 minutes make them practical for road trips. Many workplaces and municipalities also offer free or subsidized Level 2 charging.

EV Charging Costs by Province (Home, per 100 km)

ProvinceApprox. Cost/100 km
Quebec$1.20–$1.50
British Columbia$1.60–$2.10
Manitoba$1.50–$1.80
Ontario$2.00–$2.80
Alberta$2.20–$3.00
Nova Scotia$2.80–$3.50

Maintenance savings are a significant but often overlooked advantage of EVs. Without oil changes, transmission servicing, exhaust system repairs, or traditional brake wear (due to regenerative braking), EV owners typically spend $600–$1,000 less annually on maintenance compared to internal combustion vehicles. Over a 5–8 year ownership period, combined fuel and maintenance savings frequently exceed $15,000–$25,000, offsetting much or all of the higher upfront purchase price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to charge an EV in Canada?
Home charging costs $0.10-$0.20/kWh depending on province. An average EV uses 16 kWh/100km. At $0.13/kWh, that is about $2.08 per 100km vs $13+ for gas.
Are there EV incentives in Canada?
The federal iZEV program offers up to $5,000 for eligible EVs. Some provinces (BC, QC) offer additional rebates of $3,000-$7,000. Check Transport Canada for current eligibility.
